CLIENT INSIGHT | Enhancing Organizational Maturity Through the GetSET Program

The Client’s Problem:

Many nonprofits lack the systems, structures, and resources to effectively execute their missions and deliver sustainable service value to their beneficiaries and other stakeholders. To address this need, the Tower Foundation launched the GetSET (Get Success in Extraordinary Times) program in Massachusetts in 2020. As lead consultants for the program, the Day Health team deployed a comprehensive capacity-building toolkit to help four mid-sized nonprofits strengthen their infrastructure, improve their organization effectiveness, clarify their value proposition, and enhance their ability to respond to new business opportunities.

Our Approach:

Day Health consultants worked closely with participating nonprofit organizations to assess their current capacity, identify gaps and opportunities for improvement, and develop a Capacity Building Plan. Our structured, three-phased approach included:

  1. Organizational Assessment:

Our initial phase involved detailed assessments using various tools like our proprietary MOSAIC™ organizational survey and leadership interviews. This assessment helped us understand each organization’s current state in ten capacity building domains: Strategy, Leadership, Programs & Services, Measurement & Evaluation, Human Capital, Culture, Infrastructure, Processes, Communication, and Financial Strength.

  2. Capacity Building Plan Development:

Drawing from insights gained, we developed customized, comprehensive capacity-building plans. These plans detailed actions needed to enhance the organization’s capabilities in each domain.

  3. Implementation Guidance:

Throughout the final phase, Day Health provided continuous support and guidance, ensuring that the strategies were effectively implemented and adapted to align with ongoing changes and emerging opportunities.

The Impact:

The engagement enhanced each organization’s ability to effectively serve its community and meet the evolving needs of its employees, volunteers, and partners by enhancing their organizational maturity. This included developing a stronger leadership team, revamping the organization to keep up with changes in the environment, taking a close look at their internal processes, and addressing issues that had previously caused frustration and unnecessary complication (The Tower Foundation, 2021).

Based on the success of the inaugural program, Day Health and the GetSET team will soon be launching the program for another group of Massachusetts nonprofits.
